Royal Ascot Style

June 23, 2017

Ascot Racecourse, located in Berkshire, England, is Britain’s most famous thoroughbred horse racecourse and home to Royal Ascot each year, a 5-day event which often focuses more on women’s fashions than on the actual races.  Royal Ascot dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne.  It is attended by the royal family, celebrities, and the public.

This year, with record temperatures, women were seen in a lot of white and pastel colours.  Royal Ascot has always had a very strict dress code, especially in the Royal Enclosure.  For example, dresses/skirts must be of a “modest length”, defined as just above the knee of longer, straps should be of 1-inch or thicker, if jackets are worn the clothing underneath must still conform to dress code guidelines, hats should be worn, however, if a headpiece is worn it must have a solid base of 4 inches or more in diameter (and no fascinators).  This year, the dress code was revised to allow jumpsuits as long as they are full-length and meeting all requirements stated for dresses.  The other 3 enclosures, the Queen Anne Enclosure, the Village Enclosure, and the Windsor Enclosure, are less strict.

Because hats are required, or strongly encouraged depending on the enclosure, the hats are often as interesting as the dresses, or even more so. However, since we have such few occasions to wear hats, I decided to focus on the dresses.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a beautiful Alexander McQueen dress:

Since jumpsuits are now allowed, I had to include a racegoer in a jumpsuit:
